Tommies will be missing some key starters Saturday at Stetson; Amari Powell steps in at quarterback

Published Sat, 08 Feb 2025 06:02:30 GMT

In the wake of a surprisingly one-sided loss at Drake last week that ended St. Thomas’ winning streak in the Pioneer Football League at 13 games, the Tommies’ chances of rebounding on Saturday at Stetson took a major hit due to a pair of key injuries.Starting quarterback Tak Tateoka, who was injured in the first half in the 52-21 loss to Drake and did not return, will not play this week due to a leg injury that could keep him on the sidelines for an extended period. He will be replaced by sophomore quarterback Amari Powell. On the other side of the ball, a secondary that already has been playing without starting cornerback Branden Smith will now also be without starting free safety Ryan Calcagno, whowas injured late in the first half against Drake. The Tommies also have been playing without starting nose tackle Jordan Titus. While Caruso said the Tommies are as banged up as any team he has had at St. Thomas, he is not using it as an excuse for his team’s poor play against a team that,...

Vikings preparing for mighty 49ers, who could be down a pair of skill players

Published Sat, 08 Feb 2025 06:02:30 GMT

It will be a tall task for the Vikings when they play host to the mighty San Francisco 49ers on Monday Night Football. To say the 49ers boast a gluttony of talent on both sides of the ball would be putting it lightly. They are dynamic on offense and dominant on defense. That was apparent this week when head coach Kevin O’Connell was asked about the challenges of the Vikings going up against a defense that is only allowing 278 yards per game this season. He spit out a laundry list of players that included Nick Bosa and Arik Armstead on the defensive line, Fred Warner and Dre Greenlaw at linebacker, and Talanoa Hufanga in the secondary. After getting all the way through his answer, O’Connell realized he forgot Javon Hargrave, who is as disruptive as any player in the league up front.“You see impactful players at all three levels,” O’Connell said. “They have maybe some of the bests at their positions.”The only thing the Vikings might have working...

Without Greg Dulcich, Broncos TE group must find ways besides catching passes to continue making an impact

Published Sat, 08 Feb 2025 06:02:30 GMT

Sean Payton had big plans for second-year tight end Greg Dulcich this fall. The Broncos head coach talked in the offseason about the “vision” to use Dulcich, a 2022 third-round pick, as a versatile offensive weapon. One capable of stretching opposing defenses vertically and making big plays in the passing game.Dulcich, particularly after Denver waived Albert Okwuegbunam at the roster cutdown deadline in August, had a different skill set than Denver’s other tight ends. It’s showed over the course of missing most of the season due to recurring hamstring injuries.Dulcich caught two passes in the season opener against Las Vegas before hurting his hamstring, missed four games and then returned to play 11 snaps against Kansas City last week before reinjuring the muscle. The route he came up limping on, a deep over, is exactly the kind of production Denver simply doesn’t get from the trio of Adam Trautman, Chris Manhertz and Nate Adkins.“Obviously, Greg brings an aspect of speed and stretchin...

Published Sat, 08 Feb 2025 06:02:30 GMT

Shock and confusion unfolded during San Bernardino's City Council meeting Wednesday night when a woman addressing the council was subjected to racist slurs by a remote caller. It appeared to be a typical meeting, with people voicing their opinions on an agenda item. Several individuals, including Amy Malone, expressed their disapproval of the city's new manager, Charles Montoya, being voted in following allegations of misconduct in his previous positions."I have nothing against this man; I wish he'd get a second chance somewhere else," Malone said. "Obviously, when you look at his track record, you would not hire him for your own personal business."However, the situation quickly took a turn when Malone was interrupted by what seemed to be at least two men hurling racist insults on a Zoom microphone."Somebody shut this **** up. Go home, you… b***. Go back to Africa if you don't like it," the voices could be heard saying."It took me aback; I was angry, I was scared. I didn't know if I ...

Orange County school board rejects transgender notification proposal

The Capistrano Unified School District, Orange County's largest, has rejected a parental notification policy that critics say could have led to students being "outed" as transgender to their families.Unlike those enacted by Orange, Chino Valley, Murrieta Valley, Temecula Valley, Placentia Yorba-Linda and other districts, Capistrano's proposal did not specifically mention gender identity.Instead, it would have required schools to notify families if a student was "exhibiting symptoms of depression, anxiety, a dramatic shift in academic performance, social withdrawal or other significant changes affecting a student’s well-being."When pressed on the issue during Wednesday night’s school board meeting, Trustee Lisa Davis, who proposed the policy, acknowledged that it could be applied to gender identity, the Orange County Register reported. Chino Valley school board enacts transgender notification policy “I ask for your vote to make it clear to parents and guardians that we see them as ...
