MENLO PARK — Two men in their 20s are facing several felony charges, including sexual assault and possession of child pornography, after using a Snapchat account with a fake name and outdated photos to convince a 16-year-old girl to meet, according to the San Mateo County District Attorney’s Office. The alleged assaults took place in April of last year, when Menlo Park resident Sergio Caudillo Leon, 27, contacted the teen on Snapchat, authorities said. Leon picked the girl up at her San Jose home at 11 p.m. on April 6, according to the DA’s office, and told her to disable her phone’s location services, leaving her unable to be tracked online through the device. On their way to Leon’s home, they picked up 24-year-old Kevin Bladimir Cruz in East Palo Alto. At the Menlo Park home, the trio drank until the girl passed out, according to authorities. When the girl woke up, prosecutors said, she was being sexually assaulted by both men. OAKLAND — Seventeen months after he was arrested and charged with murder, an Oakland man was freed from jail when a judge determined there wasn’t ample evidence against him, court records show.Christopher Hunt, 37, was originally charged in the September 2021 shooting of 41-year-old Kanawa Long, of Hayward, based on eyewitness statements and video surveillance showing a Volvo speeding away from the homicide. But after Hunt’s preliminary hearing, Judge Kevin Murphy found prosecutors had failed to reach the low bar of probable cause required to advance the case further.Murphy’s ruling was made in February but has not been previously reported. Hunt’s lawyer, Marvin Lew, didn’t return requests for comment. Before the hearing, Lew filed court papers accusing Oakland police of filing false or misleading statements in court. Lew’s motion says a detective filed an affidavit saying the shooter was seen running toward a Volvo, when he was actually seen...Extreme weather continues to batter most of the US

The NCAA announced Monday it is creating another women’s college basketball tournament that it will operate like the men’s NIT as a second option for 32 teams that do not make the NCAA Tournament. The Women’s Basketball Invitation Tournament, which will be first held this season, brings the men’s and women’s NCAA postseason opportunities to an equal number. An NCAA-operated second option for women was one of the key focuses of an external gender equity report on the NCAA.Women’s teams that didn’t make the NCAA Tournament in the past had the opportunity to play in an independently operated WNIT — with a 64-team field — in which teams bid to host games and paid most of their own travel expenses.Hosting in that tournament could cost a school tens of thousands of dollars if they advanced far enough. This past season was the 25th anniversary of that tournament, which saw Kansas beat Columbia for the championship. MASSAPEQUA PARK, N.Y. (AP) — Detectives on Long Island are hunting for fresh clues about architect arrested in connection with a string of murders known as the Gilgo Beach killings. They’re combing through storage units linked to Rex Heuermann and using DNA evidence to see if he’s connected to other cold cases. The ongoing work Monday marks an important new phase in a multi-agency investigation that — after years of dead ends and frustrations — led prosecutors to charge Heuermann with murder last Friday in the deaths of three of the 11 women whose remains were found buried along a remote beach highway in 2010 and 2011.Heuermann, who has lived for decades across a bay from where the remains were found, is also considered the prime suspect in the killing of a fourth victim. He has pleaded not guilty. His lawyer said Heuermann denied committing the crimes.Investigators have said it’s unlikely just one person killed all of the victims, and they insist the probe is far from over after the...Judge temporarily blocks Iowa’s new ban on abortions after about six weeks of pregnancy, making them legal again for now
