Stock market today: Wall Street futures tick higher ahead if big week in retail. US Steel soars

Published Mon, 24 Feb 2025 11:18:26 GMT

Wall Street inched toward small gains before the opening bell ahead of a raft of data this week that may provide more insight into the health of U.S. retailers.Futures for the S&P 500 and the Dow Jones Industrial Average ticked up a little more than 0.1% Monday. The government on Tuesday will release its retail sales report for July, while Home Depot, Target, TJX Cos. and Walmart will post their most recent quarterly results this week.Retail spending has been a bit bumpy through the first half of the year after surging nearly 3% in January. The Fed has raised its benchmark lending rate a whopping 11 times in the past 17 months in an effort...

For Mark Zuckerberg’s Threads, the real rival is still TikTok — not the former Twitter

Published Mon, 24 Feb 2025 11:18:26 GMT

Threads, the simple, bare-bones text-based social network created by Facebook owner Meta, burst onto the scene during a particularly bad week for the rival then still known as Twitter. It quickly amassed 100 million signups — a huge feat for a newcomer in the space — and was dubbed as a “Twitter killer.” By week two, though, signups began to drop off. Is Mark Zuckerberg’s latest venture just a flash in the pan? That depends on whether it can hold its own against its biggest rival. And no, that’s not X, the former Twitter. It’s TikTok. And the odds are not great. “Mark Zuckerberg may have temporarily been distracted in his sparring with Elon Musk, but the real battle for Meta is with TikTok,” said Insider Intelligence analyst Jasmine Enberg. “And Zuckerberg still really needs to watch his b...
