Ask Amy: We live on a nice street, and we’re thinking about reporting the neighbor

Published Tue, 25 Feb 2025 02:25:59 GMT

Dear Amy: Summer is almost here and a house on our street has a really unkempt lawn. It looks like it hasn’t been mowed at all.We live on a nice street with small front lawns, and all the neighbors take pride. There is a local ordinance regarding this, but I’m on the fence about turning in these people. Another neighbor mentioned reporting them, and we were both wondering what you think.– Neat NeighborDear Neighbor: You don’t seem to know this family, but before turning them in, you might want to knock on their door and offer to cut their front lawn for them. Tell them, “It’s no big deal – zip-zip, and I’ll be done in 15 minutes.”They might be older, unwell or overwhelmed. Some church and community groups will take on this task, bringing over a small crew of volunteers, and I assume that this assistance is gratefully received by the homeowners.Dear Amy: In college in Montana, I majored in equine studies. After trying for four years, I finally got into an extremely competitive internsh...

Sometimes I am groggy during the day if I drank too much the night before, but mostly I manage just fine.I was looking at my credit card statement recently and realized that I spent a lot of money last month on booze. Spanish league reaches finish with 6 teams in danger of relegation

Published Tue, 25 Feb 2025 02:25:59 GMT

MADRID (AP) — Six teams are vying to avoid relegation to the second division as the Spanish league reaches its finish.Cadiz, Getafe and Valencia each have 41 points, Almeria and Celta have 40, and Valladolid has 39 heading into the final round of games.Valladolid is currently in 18th place, the last spot that will tumble along with already demoted Espanyol and Elche. But Valladolid has its fate in its hands because it hosts 14th-place Getafe on Sunday.A victory by the team owned by former Brazil great Ronaldo would be enough to secure salvation, but a draw could do the trick depending on other results. A draw by Getafe would be enough for the modest Madrid-based club to stay up.Cadiz, in 14th place, will play at Elche needing only a draw to ensure its survives.Valencia, which eliminated Espanyol last weekend with a stoppage-time goal, needs a draw from its trip to Real Betis, which has already secured a Europa League berth.A draw would also suffice Almeria at Espanyol.Celta, which h...

MADRID (AP) — It was the usual ending for Sevilla in an unusual season for the Spanish soccer club.Sevilla won the Europa League trophy yet again on Thursday after a season in which it went through coaching changes and had to fight just to avoid relegation in the Spanish league. The team’s struggles were quickly forgotten with its victory on penalties over Roma in the Europa League final on Wednesday in Budapest, which gave the club a record seventh title in the second-tier European competition. What looked like a season to forget turned into triumph after another impressive campaign by the Spanish club in the competition where it has been dominant in recent years. Five of its titles came within the last 10 years — 2014-16, 2020 and 2023.This time, Sevilla eliminated European powerhouses Manchester United in the quarterfinals and Juventus in the semifinals. It had gotten past Fenerbahce and PSV Eindhoven in previous rounds. On Wednesday, the team beat José Mourinho-coached Roma 4...

Mourinho acknowledges ‘nobody has called me’ as he considers his future at Roma

ROME (AP) — Almost as soon as he was awarded it, Jose Mourinho took off the silver medal that had just been hung around his neck by UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin, walked toward the stands and handed it to a young fan in the front row.“I only keep the gold ones,” Mourinho said later, still livid after his Roma squad was beaten by Sevilla in a penalty shootout to decide the Europa League final. After coaching his team to the trophy in five consecutive European finals over two decades, it was Mourinho’s first defeat at this stage and the 60-year-old Portuguese coach was quick to blame the referee for not awarding a penalty kick to Roma for a perceived handball during the second half — as well as a bunch of other decisions that he thought English referee Anthony Taylor mishandled.“The referee seemed like he was Spanish,” Mourinho said. “The result was not fair and there are a lot of instances to re-examine.”Mourinho was also seen insulting Taylor in the garage of the Puskas Arena in ...

Nowhere to run to: As Russia bombards Kyiv, 3 die after being locked out of shelter

KYIV — Ukrainians seeking shelter from Russia’s bombardment of Kyiv in the early hours of Thursday morning had nowhere to run to after they were locked out of a bomb shelter amid the wail of air raid sirens. At least three people, including a child, were killed and 19 injured, according to Ukrainian authorities.Russia launched seven ballistic and three Iskander cruise missiles from the Bryansk region bordering Ukraine, Kyiv’s air forces said, but though air defenses shot them all down, debris hit a hospital and numerous residential buildings, leading to the casualties. With Russia increasing the frequency and ferocity of its missile attacks on Kyiv and other cities and towns around Ukraine, residents have less time to seek safety in the bomb shelters that have sprung up around the country in the wake of Moscow’s full-scale invasion. In the early hours of Thursday, when most residents were in their homes, many asleep, the missiles arrived less than five minutes ...

Italy eyes ECB board seat gamble

FRANKFURT — The European Central Bank’s six-member strong executive board may welcome a new face later this year in a reshuffle that could see power shift from old, large member states to newer, smaller ones. Italian executive board member Fabio Panetta has been on the ECB’s executive board since 2020 but is thought by many to be sitting on packed bags, awaiting a move back to Rome to become the Governor of the Bank of Italy when Ignazio Visco retires in November. “It has been signaled for a long time that he would most likely follow Visco,” a former Eurosystem official said. The trouble is that the move could jeopardize Italy’s claim to one of the six top jobs in Frankfurt, reducing its influence over devising policies and robbing it of an extra vote on the policy-setting Governing Council.Officially, the ECB’s board is selected strictly on merit, irrespective of nationality. However, historically, the six-member strong executive board has always included representatives of th...
