Loudoun Co. nonprofit raises money to help a 16-year-old Blessing see again

For years, doctors believed Blessing Amuga, 16, suffered from keratoconus, a condition in which the cornea of the eye becomes thinner and takes the shape of a cone. The condition leads to a person being very light sensitive.“It’s very painful when it (light) goes into my eyes, it’s really hard for me to read,” Amuga said. Her education is important to her, but for this 11th grader, the condition has made it difficult for her to do required reading because she has to take frequent breaks to keep the pain and headaches at bay.Her mother, Mercy Amuga, said the migraines that come with the condition can be debilitating and have resulted in several emergency room visits for the young girl.“The headache affects her so that she can’t do anything, and she becomes numb,” her mother said.Treatment involves expensive surgery on each eye. Living at a homeless shelter, Blessing’s mother said they needed a miracle to get her the surgery. That miracle came from a Loudoun Coun...

Climate action must avoid fueling conflict

Inge Brees is a policy and outreach manager at Search for Common Ground. Harriet Mackaill-Hill is a climate and peace advocacy advisor at International Alert.Meeting the Paris Climate Agreement’s objective to limit the rise in global average temperature to well below 1.5 degrees Celsius will only be possible if we properly understand and mitigate the links between climate change and conflict. And as this year’s U.N. Climate Change Conference COP 28 approaches, this connection needs to be on everyone’s mind.Throughout the past century, the challenges of environmental degradation and the depletion of natural resources have evolved into potent catalysts for global insecurity and violent conflict. From the water scarcity crisis in Yemen to land ownership disputes in Kyrgyzstan and human rights violations during mining operations in the Democratic Republic of Congo, we now encounter tensions that are fueled by climate-related issues and escalate into violent confrontation every day....

LONDON —  She might have crashed Britain. But can she save the world?Former U.K. Prime Minister Liz Truss landed in Washington this week to drum up support for Ukraine among skeptical Republican lawmakers.  On both sides of the Atlantic there are hopes Truss can help steer the debate on the American right away from isolationism and toward the active international role espoused by both U.K. prime minister Rishi Sunak and U.S. President Joe Biden. Truss — no fan of either man — makes for an unlikely diplomatic superhero. The trip comes barely a year after her humiliating resignation ended a disastrous tenure as Britain’s shortest-serving prime minister. Since the end of her 49-day stint in Downing Street, Truss has tried to carve out a place for herself as a champion of right-wing policies around the world. She is in Washington this week as part of a delegation of the Conservative Friends of Ukraine (CFU), alongside fellow former Tory leaders Iain Duncan Smith and Michae...

But when her money accidentally went into someone else’s account, Solve It 7 helped her get it back. My foot slipped off the brake. It just happened so fast that I couldn’t stop in time, and I rear-ended a pickup truck. There wasn’t a dent on his car but totaled mine,” Jillian said. Her insurance company paid the claim and sent her a payment link through Venmo to get $5100.“All I did was touch it, and assuming it was going to prompt me for like verification, phone number anything, but it didn’t. It just said right away, yo...

TOKYO (AP) — World leaders and other people offered a polarized reaction Thursday to the death of the lionized and vilified former diplomat Henry Kissinger, who managed to hold global attention decades after his service as U.S. secretary of state.Former President George W. Bush struck a tone that many high-level officials, past and present, tried to convey, saying “America has lost one of the most dependable and distinctive voices” on foreign affairs.“I have long admired the man who fled the Nazis as a young boy from a Jewish family, then fought them in the United States Army,” Bush said in a statement. “When he later became Secretary of State, his appointment as a former refugee said as much about his greatness as it did America’s greatness.”Kissinger served two presidents, Richard Nixon and Gerald Ford, and dominated foreign policy as the United States extricated itself from Vietnam and broke down barriers with China.Another former secretary of state, Mike Pompeo, said...
